Normally I never provide any context for conversation snippets or quotes, because that's what you, the reader, has come to expect from trenchant daily. (And because half the time I'm probably just making things up.)

But I realized that I never actually wrote what this follows up to, and it's one of my favorite quotes.

Sometime in 1999, during a conversational pause, Le said to me, "You should really carry around index cards with interesting things to say on them."

It was her way of saying I was a bad conversationalist.
