I agree with you about WLKD, it seems to have lost something that made the original KD so special. On the other hand, the game is a lot smoother and prettier, and some of the levels are simply inspired. The snow man level, firefly level and racing level are all very welcome additions. Even if the racing level gives me motion sickness.
Also, did anyone else notice that some of the songs seem to be sung by the woman from Pizzicato Five?

I believe I read a game review/article that says they are indeed sung by that very lady.

"The first time I heard "Lonely Rolling Star," I was struck by its musical solidity, yet irked by the voice. I had heard Nomiya Maki mature into a diva; I didn't have time this late in my life to hear this nameless Namco Girl mature as well. So I proclaimed, to a friend, "Why didn't they just get Nomiya Maki to sing this song?" ... Get her to sing every song in the game that requires a female vocal. Hers is the voice I and many others associate with the kind of music Katamari Damashii is so proudly treating like it never died, anyway."
And then they did just that. Well, for W<3KD, not for all songs. Yeah.

The snowball level is pretty inspired -- I haven't played the rest you mention.
(I rather enjoyed the underwater one too.)
But yeah, overall, something seems lacking.

so i suppose you two beat KD so much because of how you love it, right? jesus people. it's a game for people who LOVE the other one. these faults are only temporal. the essence is there and strong. you can be the cousins.
all'a'y'all are jerks.

ps - october is domestic violence month!
Identifying the signs:
Have you ever been hit, kicked, shoved or threatened by violence?
Do you feel that you have no choice about how you spend your time or where you go?
Are your clothes and style of dress decided for you?
Have you ever been accused by your partner of things that you have never done?
Do you have to ask permission to make everyday decisions?
Does your partner make you feel bad about yourself by calling you names, insulting you or putting you down?
Is your time limited with your family and friends because of your partner's demands?
Do you tend to accept your partner's decision because you are afraid of his anger?
Do you change your behavior to please your partner?
Are you ever accused of being unfaithful to your partner?
Are you told that it won't ever happen again?

They did a good job of being gender neutral until they got to "his anger".

yeah, i noticed that too. maybe they meant His anger, and were referring to the wrathful God who hates and torments us all.

So, something else. The King of all Cosmos is very obviously the main character / central figure of WLKD (further emphasized by the fact that playing as any of the cousins in addition to the prince), but do any of you consider him to have had the same purpose in the original KD?
I'd like to think that Prince was supposed to be the main character. After all, we helped him push his first katamari and we were there to watch his first roll-up.

last night i revealed to adam i believe the Katamari to be the central figure / main character of WLKD/WHKD. even the king is in aw and shock, and stops short his long-winded speeches to roll or admire.
i may have been high, but i still believe that.
