Spring Break 1999
March 28, 1999
After finishing another thrilling quarter at Stanford, I thought going home for spring break would be a well deserved change from the difficult living conditions in the dorm.
Within two days, I was lying in bed, laptop to my left, Digital Satellite Services remote to my right, my obnoxious TV in front of me, and a 1900 page hardcover version of the Linux Documentation Project, and all was good. Ahhh, net access, 900 tv channels, and quality documentation to study for my new sysadmin job.
Of course, after another day or two I realized a couple of things:
- The Internet is really slow at 28.8.
- Television, even with 900 channels still sucks. More importantly, the only channels I watch, cartoon network, m2, and zdtv, don't actually have full days of content, they just loop and rerun shows constantly.
- The LDP, while quite useful and well written, isn't exactly an exciting read.
But at least I had my own bathtub, and I could cook breakfast at 1:00pm, so it wasn't all bad.
